Card Night 12-Aug-2008

Violet called 2-11 Poker as her game several times tonight.  It plays like Omaha Hi-Lo, but with the following differences:

  • Players can use either two or three of their down cards to make their hand.
  • The flop is only two cards, followed by a single-card turn and single-card river.  So at the end of the game, there are four cards on the board instead of five.
  • The low hand must be 7-high or lower to qualify instead of 8-high or lower.

It’s an interesting game, although it’s much harder to put players on hands.  The winning high hands we saw tonight ranged from a pair of 3s to big full houses.  Low hands didn’t seem to qualify nearly as often as in Omaha.

Violet called Apollo towards the end of the night, and unfortunately she got whipsawed between Mark DeVol and John.

In an unlikely scenario, John made an ace-high flush on his first five cards, while Mark made a 7-5-4-3-2 on his first five cards.  Meanwhile, Violet had 3-2-A in one of her hands (and two unimportant high cards in her other hand).  Having already made their hands, John and Mark bet and raised the maximum, making it four dollars for Violet to call each round.  Violet did call, and continued to call until she finally got a 7 to go with her 3-2-A.  She still needed a 5 or a 4 to beat Mark low; unfortunately, three of the 4s and two of the 5s were already out.  With just one card to come, Violet finally folded her hand (although at that point, the pot was so big that she was probably getting the right odds to try to hit her miracle card).  It turned out to be a good fold, as rabbit hunting revealed she would not have made her hand.
