Card Night 19-Nov-2013

When Bill sat down at the table tonight, there was $85.00 waiting for him at his seat.

“What’s this for?” he asked.

“It’s your winnings for the Football Pool.”

“I won the Pool?!”  He had no idea.

During a hand of 2-7 Triple Draw, four players were trying to win the pot: Mark DeVol, Lyndon, Chris, and Mary.

Mark controlled the betting up until the last draw, at which point Lyndon, who was first to act, suddenly bet out.  Lyndon’s not one to do something like that unless he’s got a great hand.  Chris folded, but Mary and Mark called.

Before any hands were revealed, Lyndon realized he’d made a mistake.  “I messed up,” he said.  He had forgotten that aces are high in 2-7.  He turned over A-6-4-3-2.  Mary had an 8-high.  Mark scooped the pot with a 7-high.

Mark D +$151.00
Mary ‑$118.00
Bill ‑$1.00
Chris ‑$95.00
Lyndon +$16.00
Jason ‑$129.00
Glen +$156.00

Jackpot is now $43.00.

What happened to the Web site?

Monday morning, I opened up the Football Pool results and was horrified to find that the page was completely empty!  All the data had disappeared.  Luckily I remembered that there were only two people still alive in the pool (both with the same number of wins), and each of them had picked a different team for the Monday night game, so at least I was able to determine who would win.

Today, while looking over the Web site, I realized that it wasn’t just the Football Pool data that were lost.  The entire contents of the Card Night Web site had reverted back to the state they were at a week ago!  All the Card Night results, all the players’ pages, everything that had been updated or added during the past week had disappeared.  This is very, very odd.

Luckily, I have all the Card Night results on my PC.  So really the only thing that was completely lost (as far as I can tell) was everyone’s Football Pool entries from Week 8.

Hopefully our Web host Tripod will be able to restore them.  But I’m not holding my breath.

Football Pool 2010 Week 5

This season has been a hard one to handicap, as is evident by the low number of winning picks it’s taken to win the Football Pool each week.

This week Ken won the pool by picking just 8 wins out of a total of 14 games.  That’s only a 57.1% winning percentage.  (On Week 9 of the 2003 season, Paul also won the pool with 8 wins out of 14 games.)

The lowest winning percentage we’ve ever had was back on Week 6 of the 2001 season when Mike Stefanidis picked 7 wins out of 13 games (53.8%).  That same week, Frank and Warren only picked 2 wins!

Twice players have won the pool by picking the winner of every game.  On Week 9 of the 2005 season, Mark DeVol and Michael Farrell tied for the pot with 14 wins out of 14 games.  Then on Week 5 of the 2006 season, Mark and Michael again picked 14 out of 14, but Mark won the Monday-night-score tiebreaker and scooped the pot.

No New Football Pool System

Well, based on all the problems we had this last week with people getting errors while trying to enter their Football Pool picks, I was planning on switching over to a service like Sportsline to handle everything.

But, as it turns out, in order to use Sportsline, everyone would have to start up a Sportsline account with a password, then log into the Football Pool with another password, etc., etc.  I didn’t want people to have to go through all the hassle.

So, I’m keeping the Football Pool the way it is on the Card Night web page.  And, again, if you’re unable to enter your picks, simply e-mail them to me and I’ll do it for you.  (Hopefully the problem will eventually go away.)
