Card Night 28-Jul-2009

Mike arrived as usual with his dinner in hand, but tonight he got a surprise.

He had ordered two tacos and a burrito from Taco Bell.  When the attendant handed him his food at the drive-thru window, Mike was talking to Lynn on the phone, so he didn’t notice how heavy the bag was.

When he got to Mark DeVol’s house, he discovered that the bag did not contain the three things he had ordered, but instead had a total of 14 various food items!

Mike shared all his bounty with the group.  He figured that it made up for all the times Taco Bell has screwed him at the drive-thru.

Glen got so close to winning his first jackpot.  Twice tonight he made natural quads, but was denied jackpot each time thanks to the Omaha jackpot rule.  (Three of the four-of-a-kind were on the board, one was in his hand.)

Glen called 2-11 Poker tonight, and before he dealt the first hand, Mark reviewed the rules with everyone.  He explained how there would only be four cards on the board, and that players could use two or three of their hole cards to make their hands.  Mark took particular care to emphasize that a qualifying low hand was 7-high or lower, not 8-high or lower as in Omaha.  Just to be sure everyone understood, Mark repeated, “Low is 7-high or lower.”

Glen dealt the first hand.  At showdown only Bill and Paul were left.

Paul showed the winning high hand.  Bill showed what he thought was the winning low hand: 8-high.

Paul scooped.  Bill cussed.

That 2-11 hand contributed to what would be Bill’s worst Card Night ever (-$154.00).

Two other hands that hurt him:

On a hand of Buck ’em, playing two cards out of three, everyone passed to Bill who was one to the right of the button.  Bill declared low.  Action got back around to Mike who was in early position, and he checked Bill off.  Mike’s A-3 beat Bill for $13.50.

Later Bill flopped a set of kings in Omaha Hi-Lo.  The betting was capped or nearly capped on every street.  At showdown, the board was K-7-2-7-9, giving Bill the nut full house.  Mark turned over a pair of 7s for four-of-a-kind.

Card Night 21-Jul-2009

With only five of us playing tonight, the games went quickly, and that meant more contributions to jackpot.  $21.00 was added, tying the single-night record.

Jackpot needed it, too.  The recent spurt of payouts had reduced it to just $5.00 going into tonight.

Mark D ‑$50.00
Paul +$75.00
Phil +$34.00
Jason ‑$51.00
Glen ‑$29.00

Card Night 14-Jul-2009

Mark DeVol was a giant a-hole tonight.

Mary won jackpot twice, first with four aces, then with a 9-high straight flush. It’s the fourth time she’s won jackpot twice in one night.

Other players who have won jackpot twice in one night:

  • Frank
  • Ike
  • Mark H
  • Paul*
  • Warren
  • Bill
  • Mike S*

* – Paul and Mike Stefanidis have also each won jackpot three times in one night.

On a hand of Texas Hold ’em Hi-Lo Declare, Phil looked disgusted when he saw that each of the other three players in the hand had declared high.  But then Phil looked down and saw a single chip in his hand.  He had also intended to go high, but had mis-declared!  He ended up collecting the low half of the pot with his two pair.  (Turns out he would have lost if he had declared high as he intended.)

Paul is really scared of jokers.

When Bill called Buck ’em, Paul asked if we could play the game without a joker in the deck.  He claimed that it makes the game more exciting, but it’s pretty clear that he’s just frightened of jokers for some reason.

Remember in the old days when Paul would call Pai-Gow Poker?  He’d always play it without a joker, even though everyone else (including casinos) plays it with a joker!

Maybe a joker really scared him when he was a little kid, and he’s just never gotten over it.

Paul's a-scared!

Mark D ‑$6.00
Mary ‑$52.00
Paul ‑$30.00
Phil +$28.00
Bill +$54.00
Lyndon +$63.00
Mike S ‑$54.00

Card Night spans

No matter our styles of play, we’ve each had long spans of Card Nights where we’ve won.  And, conversely, we’ve each had long spans of Card Nights where we’ve lost.

Here are a couple tables showing the longest of these spans for all of our regular players.

The first table shows the longest span that resulted in an overall win for each player.  For example, Mary had a span of 38 attended Card Nights (from 13-Mar-2007 through 22-Jan-2008) where her net result was an overall win.

The second table shows the longest span that resulted in an overall loss for each player.  For example, Mark D had a span of 63 attended Card Nights (from 24-Sep-2001 through 03-Feb-2003) where his net result was an overall loss.

Card Night 07-Jul-2009

It was Jackpot-a-Palooza tonight!

First Paul hit a straight flush (2♠-3♠-4♠-5♠-6♠) in Omaha Hi-Lo for a $42.00 payout.

Next Mark DeVol amazingly hit the exact same straight flush (2♠-3♠-4♠-5♠-6♠) in Omaha Hi-Lo for a $12.25 payout.

Later, Mary hit four 5s in Texas Hold ’em Hi-Lo Declare for $3.75.  (Not a big payout, but don’t forget, she won a $51.25 jackpot last week.)

And finally, Phil hit four kings in Omaha High for $4.25.

Jackpot is now down to a measly $8.00.

Meanwhile, Glen is anxiously awaiting his first jackpot ever.

On average, each player wins jackpot about once every eight Card Nights.  Glen has now attended 32 times but has yet to hit a jackpot hand.

Hang in there, Glen!

Lyndon set a personal record tonight by attending his 12th Card Night in a row.

John asked what the record was for the fewest pitches by a single pitcher in a complete nine-inning game.  The answer: 58, thrown by Charley “Red” Barrett in 1944.

Mark D +$80.00
Mary ‑$4.00
Paul +$50.00
Phil +$60.00
John ‑$47.00
Lyndon ‑$51.00
Mike S ‑$55.00
Glen +$12.00
