Card Night 24-Nov-2009

This was Mary’s night.

Coming off her second Football Pool win in a row (and third win for the season), Mary won a tidy $119.00 for the night.  Two jackpot wins and a large Buck ’em pot played no small roles in her big win.

Miguel started the night off by calling a game that Ty Chang created.  (Ty played with us once back on July 22, 2008.)  The game is called Football (aka Fútbol, aka Ty’s 7s) and has a structure similar to Texas Hold ’em, with the following exceptions:

  • 7s are wild.
  • Each player is dealt three hole cards.
  • There are only two cards on the flop, followed by a one-card turn and a one-card river.
  • Players can use any combination of their three hole cards and the four board cards.
  • The player with the highest hand splits the pot with the player with the highest three-of-a-kind.

Although the game initially comes across as contrived, it actually plays very well.  In fact, Jason called it again when the deal came around to him.

The strategy seems to be simple enough: Play only if you have a 7 as a hole card.  (Of course, there are exceptions.  For example, on one hand, John was dealt three kings as his hole cards and won the best-trips half of the pot.)

Glen made a move that had us laughing through the night.  We were playing either Texas Hold ’em or Omaha, and Glen was in the small blind.  He had put a dollar chip out for the blind because he didn’t have any 25-cent chips.  (The small blind is 50 cents.)  When action finally got around to him, he took that opportunity to get change from John for his dollar chip.  He posted the 50-cent blind, held the other 50 cents in his hand, and then looked at his cards.  He decided he wanted to play, so he stacked the 50 cents in his hand onto the 50-cent blind.  Why didn’t he just look at his cards first and leave his dollar chip out there?  We laughed about it, and continued to laugh any time someone made change for a small blind.

So!  Are we all clear on how the joker plays in Buck ’em?  Do we need to go over it again?  Is everyone clear?  Is there anyone who’s not clear?

Card Night 17-Nov-2009

Lyndon announced that tonight would be his last Card Night.  Although we’re sorry to see him go, we wish him luck in his life and career going forward.

Lyndon’s Card Night participation can be considered a success.  He attended 93 times, generating an overall win of $597.00.  He was the big winner for the night about once every five times he played, and he leaves with a 2009 win of $149.00.

Lyndon, you’re welcome back any time.

Bill came to Card Night straight from the watering hole, and the party continued into the night.

When the deal came around to Mary, and she didn’t call Buck ’em, Bill yelled out, “Traitor!  Traitor!  Traitor!” for what seemed like five minutes.

Mike was not feeling well, and after he quickly dropped $50.00, it looked like he was going to call it an early evening.  But, he dug back into his wallet, rebuying chips two dollars at a time, until he won a sizable pot.  That kept him alive, and he ended up staying for the whole night.

Morgan DollarPaul used a Morgan Dollar as his card protector tonight.  Morgan Dollars were silver dollar coins minted from 1878 through 1904, and again for one year in 1921.  They are named after their designer, George T. Morgan.  Depending on their minting and grade, Morgan Dollars are valued anywhere from $10 to $100,000.  (No word on how much Paul’s is worth.)

Hey! Here’s some information about the joker in Buck ‘em! For low, it’s completely wild! For high, it can be used to complete a straight, flush, or straight flush; otherwise it’s an ace!

All this information and more can be found on the Poker Games page of the Card Night Web site!

Card Night 10-Nov-2009

On the first hand of a round of 2-11 Poker, Phil was dealt three 3s.  He quickly folded, forgetting that in 2-11 you can use two or three of your hole cards to make your hand.  A 3 came on the flop, meaning Phil would have won jackpot had he not folded.

There were only five players left at the end of the night, so Paul decided to call two rounds of $2-$4 Texas Hold ’em as the last game.  Lyndon was reluctant to play, but said he’d see how the first round went, then decide whether he’d play the second round.

Lyndon needn’t have worried.  He was staring at a $40.00 loss for the night when the game began, but he ended up making all his money back and more.  He won $5.00 for the night.

Twice tonight, a pot was won pre-flop in Texas Hold ’em: once by Mark DeVol, once by Paul.  Are we getting tighter?

Card Night 03-Nov-2009

A lot of $2-$4 Texas Hold ’em resulted in bigger than usual wins and losses tonight.  Each player either won or lost at least $39.00.

Two players lost over $100, only the third time that’s ever happened.  (Note: All three occurrences have been in 2009.)

Paul won jackpot with a queen-high straight flush in Texas Hold ’em, then won jackpot again on the very next hand with four 7s.  We’ve had back-to-back jackpot wins before, but as far as we could remember, this is the first time we’ve had back-to-back jackpot wins by the same player.

During a hand of Omaha Hi-Lo, the board ended up 5-10-7-J-K rainbow.  Mike showed Mark DeVol and Paul his hand before folding, lamenting the fact that he had missed a flush draw and a nut-low draw.  Mike had failed to notice that he had A-Q in the hole, giving him the nuts: an ace-high straight.  Lyndon won the hand with a lower straight.

For showdown at the end of the night, Mark called five-card hi-lo split.  A split pot for showdown!  How exciting!  We here at Card Night are on the cutting edge!
