Card Night 26-May-2011

Mike Stefanidis won jackpot twice tonight, allowing him to recapture the jackpot title from Paul.  Mike has now won the most jackpots (72) and the most jackpot money ($1,416.75).

However, even though he won two jackpots (totaling $43.75), Mike still lost for the night.  One of the problems was that the second jackpot he won was when he made four 3s in $2-$4 Razz.  That jackpot paid him $15.25, but he had to throw $14.00 into the Razz pot (which of course he lost) to stay in the hand!  Net win: $1.25.

Glen was the big winner yet again tonight.  He is now up $734.00 for the year.  No one has ever had that high a year-to-date total going into June.  The closest anyone has come was when Glen was up $445.00 on 26-May-2009.

Miguel attended his third Card Night in a row, a personal record.

On a hand of Omaha Hi-Lo, the flop came 6♣-8♣-9♣.

Bill was holding A♣-2♣-x-x, meaning he had flopped the nut flush with a draw to the nut low.  He bet, and Glen and Mark DeVol called.

The turn was the 3♦.  Bill now had the nuts both ways.  He bet, Glen called.  Then Mark raised.  Bill re-raised, and it ended up getting capped with Bill, Glen, and Mark still in the hand.

The river was the 3♠.  This time, Mark led out the betting, and once again it was capped with Bill, Glen, and Mark going to showdown.

Bill turned over his nut flush and nut low, but Mark also had the nut low and had made a full house on the river!  (Glen mucked, saying he had the second nut low.)

So Bill went from having a monster hand to losing money when he was quartered for low and lost the high to Mark’s full house.

Card Night 19-May-2011

Miguel was the big loser tonight, although it was only a $44.00 loss.  It’s the first time Miguel was the big loser for the night.

Miguel called a round of 3-5-7, a Guts/Challenge-type game where 3s are wild on the three-card round, 5s are wild on the five-card round, and 7s are wild on the seven-card round.

We’ve played 3-5-7 before, but not very often.  (Mike Stefanidis won jackpot with a straight flush on a round of 3-5-7 back on 27-Dec-2005.)

Paul called a round of Four-Three, but without Mary or Bill in attendance, the pot never grew above its initial amount.

Mark D +$10.00
Paul +$40.00
Phil +$2.00
Jeff +$38.00
Lyndon ‑$25.00
Miguel ‑$44.00
Mike S ‑$9.00

Jackpot is now $52.00.

Card Night 12-May-2011

Miguel called Construction as the last game of the night.

Paul, who had been dealt four spades in the hole, was the only one who did any betting.  When the entire board was revealed, and there was no spade that Paul could use to complete his flush, he checked.  And everyone else checked.

It was clear that no one was particularly pleased with his hand.

Come time to declare, Miguel, Paul and Lyndon went low.  Mark DeVol and Phil went high.

Lyndon won low with a 7-high that was slightly better than Miguel’s.

Mark and Phil agreed that they both had two pair, and that Phil’s two pair was better.  But just before the pot was about to be split, Bill said, “Mark, you’ve got a straight!”  Sure enough, Mark had a 6-high straight that had been revealed when the final two cards on the board were turned over.

If Mark had seen it, he probably would have gone low only, because a low straight rarely wins for high in Construction.  But if he had gone both ways, he would have scooped!  As it turned out, he won the high half of the pot.

Ty recorded his first ever Card Night win taking home $24.00.

Ty +$24.00
Mark D ‑$15.00
Paul ‑$63.00
Phil ‑$24.00
Bill ‑$9.00
Lyndon ‑$66.00
Miguel +$82.00
Glen +$55.00

Jackpot is now $64.00.

Card Night 05-May-2011

The last few Card Nights, Paul has been making progress towards turning his 2011 into a winning year.  However, tonight’s $103.00 loss undoes a lot of that progress.

He’s currently down $156.00 for the year.  This is the deepest into a calendar year that his year-to-date total has been negative.

Prior to this, the deepest into a calendar year that he had a negative total was 27-Apr-2004 when he was down $28.00.  The following week he won, and he stayed in the positive for the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, Mike Stefanidis made some progress in turning his year around.  He posted just his third win for the year, but it was a big one: +$104.00.

The big win can be attributed to a new technique that Mike employed whereby he would announce what he had before the hand was over.  And he never lied.

“I’ve got trips, and I’m just waiting for the board to pair.”

“I’ve got the absolute nuts right now.”

“I’ve got the ace of diamonds.  Here, let me show you.”

Back in 2009, four entries in a row here at this blog included an explanation of how the joker plays in Buck ’em.  The explanation was sort of snarky, seeing as how it seemed to not be getting through to people.  The explanation was repeated word-for-word for four blog entries in a row.  The fifth blog entry had the following:

So!  Are we all clear on how the joker plays in Buck ‘em?  Do we need to go over it again?  Is everyone clear?  Is there anyone who’s not clear?

Apparently it’s still not clear.

So, once again, here is the explanation:

Hey! Here’s some information about the joker in Buck ‘em!  For low, it’s completely wild!  For high, it can be used to complete a straight, flush, or straight flush; otherwise it’s an ace!

All this information and more can be found on the Poker Games page of the Card Night Web site!

Mark D +$48.00
Mary ‑$47.00
Paul ‑$103.00
Phil +$39.00
Bill +$22.00
Jeff +$7.00
Mike S +$104.00
Glen ‑$52.00

Jackpot is now $48.00.
