Card Night 29-Jun-2009

Tonight was all Mary.

She was the big winner for the night, the first time since April 2008.

She won $109.00, her best night since November 2007.

She won a $51.25 jackpot, the biggest one of the year, and Mary’s biggest jackpot payout ever.

Lyndon broke his six-Card Night losing streak with a $40.00 win.

Phil lost for his seventh consecutive Card Night, a personal record.

Paul just went on and on about how he loves soccer.  Every week he’s like a broken record.  Give us a break!

Paul +$58.00
Warren ‑$59.00
Phil ‑$57.00

Card Night 23-Jun-2009

Jackpot Alert! For the fourth week in a row, no one won jackpot, so it is now up to $86.00.  Whoever wins it will take home the biggest payout of the year.

Both Mary and Paul broke even tonight.  It’s only the second time that two players have done that on the same night (and it’s the first time Mary has ever had a break-even Card Night). The first time was back on July 15, 2003, when both Frank and Phil broke even.

Based on data collected since January 1, 2001, the chances of any two players breaking even on the same night (on a table of seven players) are about 1 in 200. The chances of two specific people breaking even on the same night are about 1 in 4300.

Around 8:00 p.m., Lyndon had still not arrived.  It was a little odd, because Lyndon is usually very good about letting us know when he’ll be late.  Mark DeVol finally got ahold of him on his cell phone.

Mark:  Hey, Lyndon.  Are you coming tonight?

Lyndon:  [Long pause]  Is it Tuesday?  Holy s@*t!

Mark D ‑$5.00
Mary $0.00
Paul $0.00
Bill ‑$39.00
Lyndon ‑$29.00
Miguel ‑$35.00
Mike S +$82.00
Glen +$9.00

Card Night 16-Jun-2009

Several of our regulars couldn’t make it tonight, so we only had five players.  Still, there was plenty of action.

Mark DeVol was the big winner for the night ($51.00) thanks in a large part to a round of Texas Hold ’em he called late in the evening.  He won four out of the five hands dealt, one of which was a full kill.

Lyndon made some great moves on a couple Texas Hold ’em Hi-Lo Declare hands.

On one hand, he raised pre-flop, and the board ended up with an ace and a deuce in it.  Everyone figured Lyndon would be declaring high (because either he had started with a high hand, or he had started with something like A-2 and had been counterfeited for low).  He ended up declaring low (along with everyone else) and scooped the pot.  Lyndon showed 7-5.  And he had raised pre-flop!

On another hand, Lyndon again raised pre-flop.  Paul and Mark came along for the ride.  Lyndon bet out on every street, even when the board showed a possible flush, so Paul and Mark figured Lyndon was going low.  When Lyndon bet on the river, Paul raised hoping to get Mark to fold so that he could declare high and split the pot with Lyndon.  Mark did indeed fold, but come declare time, Paul and Lyndon both went high!  Lyndon scooped the pot with pocket kings.

Despite making those deceptive moves in Texas Hold ’em Hi-Lo Declare, Lyndon had a rough night. His $60.00 loss makes it five losing Card Nights in a row, a new personal record.

Glen called 2-11 Poker twice tonight.

On one hand, four players were in before the flop.  Everyone checked on the flop, the turn, and the river.  The board was J-9-2-2.  At showdown everyone turned over their cards.  Lyndon and Mark both showed a single jack in their hands (giving them both two pair, jacks and deuces), but Lyndon had an ace kicker.  Lyndon scooped the pot, but with the cards still exposed Mark said, “Wait, Lyndon, I think I’ve got you beat.”  Mark’s cards were J-7-7-6, and since this was 2-11, he was able to play the J-7-7 from his hand and the J-9 from the board to give him two pair, jacks and 7s.  Mark apologized for the unintentional slow-roll, and Lyndon handed over the modest $3.75 pot.

It just goes to show how unfamiliar we still are with 2-11.

No one won jackpot for the third week in a row, the first time that’s happened since November.  And because there were only five of us tonight, we played a lot of hands, adding $21.00 to jackpot.  It now stands at $69.00.

Mark D +$51.00
Paul ‑$13.00
John +$3.00
Lyndon ‑$60.00
Glen ‑$2.00

Card Night 09-Jun-2009

Bill was the big winner tonight (+$99.00), despite being exhausted after getting back from vacation earlier in the day.  The win catapults him into first place for the year (+$428.00).

Other than that, the rest of the news unfortunately has to do with losing:

  • Glen’s losing streak now stands at five Card Nights.  He has dropped into third place for the year (+$379.00).  (Paul is currently in second at +$388.00.)
  • Phil is in the middle of his worst losing streak ever: six Card Nights in a row.
  • Mary won a $23.25 Buck ’em pot, and made a great call with two pair to win the high half of a big Omaha Hi-Lo pot, but despite that, she lost $93.00 for the night.

No one won jackpot for the second week in a row, so it now stands at $48.00, the largest it’s been in four months.

Over the weekend, Paul and Mike got into a debate as to what was the better route to take when driving to Harrah’s Rincon CasinoMike’s way was to take Interstate 15 to the the Via Rancho Parkway exit by North County Fair.  Paul’s way was to continue up Interstate 15 to the Gopher Canyon Road exit north of Escondido.

According to Google Maps, Mike’s way is 11.1 miles shorter and six minutes faster than Paul’s way.

Mark D +$9.00
Mary ‑$93.00
Paul ‑$4.00
Phil ‑$76.00
Bill +$99.00
Lyndon ‑$10.00
Mike S +$73.00
Glen ‑$17.00

Hansen Quarterly Hold ’em Tourney, Spring 2009

Expectations were high for a good showing by the Tuesday Card Night people at Dave Hansen’s poker tournament Saturday.  Lyndon, Jason, Mike, Mary, Paul and I were all in attendance.  (Bill and Phil were out of town.)

In past tournaments, at least one (and often more than one) Tuesday player has made the final table.

Not this time.  Most of us were knocked out before even half of all players had been eliminated.

I was first of our group to go.  At my first table, my pocket kings ran into pocket aces.  Later after the first break, I flopped top set and lost to a straight on the river.  Finally, I went all in short-stacked with top pair (jacks) and an ace kicker only to lose to pocket queens.  I did not win a single hand all night. It’s amazing I lasted as long as I did.

Mary was next to go.  She went all in with A-K on a flop of A-J-9.  Her opponent had J-9 for two pair and knocked her out.

Paul’s exit was possibly the most painful.  He went all-in with J-6 on a flop of J-6-4.  An opponent called with J-7.  Paul was just hoping to avoid a 7 so that his opponent wouldn’t have a higher two pair.  However, the turn and the river were both queens, giving both Paul and his opponent queens and jacks.  His opponent’s 7 kicker beat Paul’s 6 kicker, and Paul was out!

Shortly after, Mike decided to make a move in the small blind.  There had been only one caller ahead of him, and he looked down at pocket 3s.  He went all-in, only to run up against pocket queens in the small blind.  The queens held up, and Mike was eliminated.

Jason was knocked out around the same time, although I don’t know how it happened.

Mike, Mary, Paul and I left together (we had carpooled) leaving Lyndon behind as the only remaining Tuesday Night player.  He was eventually eliminated in 11th place, just shy of the final table.

Mary ‑$44.00
Paul +$28.00
Warren +$33.00
John +$8.00
