Card Night 27-Oct-2009

Glen and Lyndon both set personal records tonight for consecutive Card Nights attended (10 and 14 respectively).  Glen’s streak is probably at an end, as he will not be able to attend next week.  Lyndon’s streak may continue next week if he can get to Card Night in time following a plane trip.

Mike bought in for $50, which very quickly dropped to under $10.  It was clear based on his mood and health (he had a bad cough) that if he lost that $50, he would probably call it a night.  But, a huge pot and some good luck brought him all the way back, and he ended up going home $30 ahead.

Hey!  Here’s some information about the joker in Buck ’em!  For low, it’s completely wild!  For high, it can be used to complete a straight, flush, or straight flush; otherwise it’s an ace!

All this information and more can be found on the Poker Games page of the Card Night Web site!

Card Night 20-Oct-2009

Glen had his best Card Night ever, taking home a whopping $168.00.  He was already up well over $100 before winning a big Buck ’em pot on the penultimate game of the night.

Going into tonight, Glen was already the 2009 leader.  With tonight’s win, his lead is now over $150 ahead of his nearest competitor.

Jackpot was decimated tonight thanks to two big hands.  Jason won $55.25 with a 10-high straight flush, then Lyndon won $15.00 with a 5-high straight flush.  Both hands occurred while playing Omaha Hi-Lo.  Jackpot now stands at just $8.00.

Card Night 13-Oct-2009

Mike hosted Card Night for the first time ever tonight.  Lynn provided plenty of food, including chili, taquitos, chicken wings, brownies, and more.

Despite the fact that it was made clear last week that Card Night would be at Mike’s house, Bill still forgot and went to Mark DeVol’s.  He realized his mistake when he saw the gates closed and no other cars.

Mark missed his first Card Night in over three and a half years.  His record-setting consecutive Card Night streak ended at 180.

Meanwhile, tonight Bill set a personal consecutive Card Night attendance record of 12.

During dinner, Phil set his plate down on an empty box next to the poker table.  Mike’s dog Buttons quickly came over and snagged a chicken bone off the plate.

“She’s got a chicken bone!” Phil cried out.

Knowing that chicken bones have a notorious way of splintering and getting caught in a dog’s throat, Mike caught Buttons and tried to extract the bone from her mouth.  But it was already too far back in her throat.

“Let me try,” said Phil.  “I don’t care if she bites me.”

Phil stuck his hand in Button’s mouth and was summarily bitten.

Great, thought Mike.  Phil’s going to sue me, and my dog’s going to die.

Neither has happened.  Yet.

Card Night 06-Oct-2009

Buck ’em had a profound impact on people’s results tonight.

On a two-cards-out-of-three round with a $23.25 pot, Phil declared high.  He already had one leg, so if no one checked him off and no one went low, he’d win the game.  Bill thought for a long while about it, and finally decided to check Phil off.  When the hand was over, both Bill and Phil went for their wallets, each thinking he had lost to the other.  It turns out Phil had had Q-Q while Bill had had a king and the joker.  Phil had thought that the joker was wild, giving Bill a pair of kings.  But, when playing two cards out of three for high, the joker is always an ace, so Bill had A-K.  Bill paid Phil the $23.25.  (Yes, Bill checked Phil off with just A-K!  Bill must have REALLY thought Phil was bluffing.)

Later, the following happened on a five-cards-out-of-seven round with a $62.00 pot.  Phil passed.  Glen passed.  Mark DeVol passed.  Mike, who already had one leg, declared high.  It was passed all the way around back to Glen who decided to check Mike off.  Glen had an ace-high flush.  Mike had a full house.  This round solidified Mike’s and Glen’s results for the entire night.  (Glen had been on a tear up to this point, seemingly making the nut low in every Omaha Hi-Lo hand he played.)

Bill ended up winning the game when the pot was $77.50.  Even so, his night had been going so badly that he still ended up down for the night.

Mark D +$12.00
Mary +$13.00
Paul ‑$55.00
Phil ‑$19.00
Bill ‑$13.00
Lyndon +$19.00
Mike S +$58.00
Glen ‑$31.00
