Card Night 18-Dec-2012

Tonight was Jeff’s birthday, so we celebrated by singing him Happy Birthday while he blew out a candle on a Twinkie.  (Hopefully it won’t be the last Twinkie he ever has.)

Mark DeVol’s December game tonight was Six-Card Texas Hold ’em.  The structure is like Hold ’em, but everyone is dealt six cards to start.  After the first betting round, players set their six cards into three separate two-card hands.  After the betting round on the flop, players must discard one of their two-card hands.  After the betting round on the turn, players must discard another one of their two-card hands, leaving them with just one two-card hand.  The game plays out just like regular Hold ’em.

It looks like we won’t be playing next week, so tonight marks the last Card Night of 2012.

Glen finished the year as the big winner.  And it wasn’t just a big win, it was the biggest year-long win by any player ever: +$1,309.00!

Phil also had his best year ever, pocketing $287.00 (although he stopped attending Card Night in August).

On the flipside, the following players had their worst years ever:

Ty -$180.00
Paul -$16.00
Jeff -$409.00
Lyndon -$185.00
Miguel -$173.00

This was the first year Paul lost money.  As a result, Mark is now the only active player who has never had a losing year.

Some other year-end stats:

Paul and Mike Stefanidis attended their fewest Card Nights ever in a single year.  Paul showed up 43 times (out of a possible 46), and Mike attended only 19 times.

Meanwhile Jeff attended his most Card Nights in a single year (tying his 2011 total with 41).  Ty (4), Jason (28), and Joe (2) also set personal attendance records for a single year.

Ty +$10.00
Mark D ‑$68.00
Bill ‑$3.00
Jeff ‑$55.00
Lyndon +$44.00
Jason ‑$14.00
Miguel ‑$23.00
Glen +$96.00

Jackpot is now $29.00.

Card Night 11-Dec-2012

Jeff was on fire tonight, scooping pot after pot (and winning his tenth jackpot of the year).  When the dust had settled, Jeff cashed out for a $186.00 win, his best Card Night ever.

Mark DeVol called three “December Games” tonight.

First was Two-Handed, Three-Card, Low-Ball Guts, a game we used to play quite a bit in the old days.

Next was The River’s Wild, simply Texas Hold ’em where the river card and all other cards of the same rank are wild.

And finally, we played Wild Cards Going Both Ways, another game we used to play all the time.

Mark D ‑$78.00
Bill ‑$80.00
Jeff +$186.00
Lyndon ‑$11.00
Jason ‑$34.00
Glen +$11.00

Jackpot is now $16.00.

Card Night 04-Dec-2012

Paul’s birthday is this Saturday, so to celebrate, tonight we had a nice cake with candles and we all sang Happy Birthday to our good friend.

There was only one problem.

Paul wasn’t there.

After attending 187 consecutive Card Nights (a record), Paul failed to show up tonight.  He had threatened not to come, stating the he was starting to dread attending, but no one really took him seriously.  Paul has been the stalwart Card Night attendee, holding the record for most appearances since we started keeping records in 2001.  Everyone just thought he was bluffing.  Apparently not.  (Phone calls to him went unanswered.)

With Paul’s absence, tonight marked the first time in Card Night history that only one original Card Night player (Mark DeVol) was in attendance.  Every other player attending tonight joined the game in 2004 or later.

Happily in attendance, however, was Lyndon, whose birthday is also Saturday.

During a hand of Stud 8, it came down to Lyndon and Jeff.

Lyndon turned over his cards.  “7-high for low,” he said.

Jeff turned over his cards.  “Two pair for high.”

“Wait a minute!” someone else said.  “Lyndon, you’ve also got a straight!”

Lyndon scooped the pot.

Glen brought two big Costco pizzas for everyone tonight.  The occasion?  Just to give a little something back to Card Night.  (Glen’s having a monster year.)

Tonight was Jeff’s 100th Card Night.  He was presented with a certificate to show off to friends and family.

Every December, Mark DeVol calls games we don’t normally play.

His first game tonight was Four-Card Stud 8.  Each player starts with four down cards instead of two, and the bring-in is the high card instead of the low card.  After the second betting round, players must discard two of their down cards.  Play then continues just like regular Stud 8.  We were expecting some really big hands because of the extra cards, but surprisingly the hands were pretty standard.

His second game was Blackjack Poker.  It was Seven-Card Stud where the player with the best poker hand splits the pot with the player who has the best blackjack hand using all his down cards.  (A player could choose to get his river card dealt up for a $4.00 fee.)  On one hand, Mary made four-of-a-kind aces for her poker hand, and 21 for her blackjack hand!

Mary’s four aces were actually her second jackpot win for the night.  Earlier she made a king-high straight flush in Omaha Hi-Lo.

Mark D +$83.00
Mary +$77.00
Jeff +$12.00
Lyndon ‑$79.00
Jason ‑$41.00
Glen ‑$34.00

Jackpot is now $10.00.
