Card Night 27-Jul-2010

What hath Paul wrought?

Seven weeks ago, Paul introduced a new game called Four-Three.  It was an incredibly simple game.  Players received four hole cards, and they decided whether they wanted to play those cards (along with three cards yet to be dealt) for the money in the pot.  Whoever got the highest hand would split the pot with whomever got the lowest hand, and all losers would have to match the pot for the next hand.

Tonight Bill called a round of Four-Three.

By the time the dust had settled, one player had his best Card Night ever, another had his worst, and $381.00 was exchanged between all winners and losers.

The pot started at its initial $7.75, quickly grew to around $38.00, then to around $77.00, then close to $154.00.

Paul took a beating early in the game, but made a big comeback when he scooped a ~$77.00 pot with the wheel.

Mary played all but one hand in the game.  She and Mike split the final pot of ~$154.00.

Phil and Jason bore most of the brunt of the game.  Bill actively participated and managed to emerge from the game relatively unharmed.

Mike Stefanidis had his best Card Night ever: +$215.00.  It was the third biggest Card Night win of all time, behind Paul (+$256.00, 19-Feb-2008) and Mike Coyne (+$240.00, 11-Feb-2002).

Mike is now the only player to have won over $200 twice.  (The other time was earlier this year on 09-Feb-2010: +$206.00)

Phil had his worst Card Night ever: -$262.00.  It was the worst Card Night loss of all time, beating Paul’s previous record of -$215.00 on 28-Jan-2002.  Those two losses are the only $200+ losses in Card Night history.

$381.00 was exchanged between winners and losers, the third highest exchange in Card Night history behind 02-Jan-2009 ($383.00) and 19-Feb-2008 ($394.00).

Tonight was the third time in Card Night history that two players won $100 or more while two other players lost $100 or more.

It was the first time in Card Night history that a player won $200 or more while another player lost $200 or more.

Despite all that volatility, Mark DeVol, Paul, Bill, and Lyndon had relatively unexceptional results for the night.  (Lyndon arrived after the round of Four-Three.)

Mark D +$18.00
Mary +$140.00
Paul ‑$5.00
Phil ‑$262.00
Bill ‑$1.00
Lyndon +$8.00
Jason ‑$106.00
Mike S +$215.00

Card Night 20-Jul-2010

New player Jeff joined us for his first Card Night, and he wasted no time in winning jackpot with four 2s in Omaha Hi-Lo.  (Compare that with Glen who played with us for 40 Card Nights over the span of an entire year before winning his first jackpot.)  Jeff ended the night with a nice $17.00 win.

Players’ favorite games seemed to be their downfalls tonight.

Bill called Buck ’em twice and lost pots to Mark DeVol (who was dogging) and Paul (who had Bill beat by one card for low on two hands).

Paul called Texas Hold ’em Hi-Lo Declare, and on each hand he either guessed the wrong way or lost to a better hand.

Mark D +$14.00
Paul ‑$32.00
Phil +$56.00
Bill ‑$60.00
Jeff +$17.00
Lyndon +$18.00

Card Night 13-Jul-2010

Mark DeVol told Mike Stefanidis that if Mike were to host a poker tournament, Mark would run the entire thing without playing in the tournament himself.  That would allow Mike to play in the tournament in a relaxing, enjoyable way.

Moments later at showdown in a hand of Texas Hold ’em, Mary and Paul turned over their hands to reveal the same two pairs.  Mark announced that Mary had won the pot with a bigger kicker than Paul’s.  However, it turned out that a queen on the board was actually the kicker that played for both Mary and Paul, and the two of them split the pot.

Mark’s egregious error called into question his ability to run an entire poker tournament.

While we were watching the All-Star Game, Paul predicted that in ten years there would be “no baseball.”  Mike suggested a wager between Paul and himself to test that claim.  Paul declined.

The flop on a hand of Omaha Hi-Lo came all hearts with no low cards.  Mike bet, and uncharacteristically everyone else folded.  Mike let out a groan.  He had made a flush, but was also on a straight-flush draw.  Rabbit hunting revealed that he would have made that straight flush and won jackpot (which would have amounted to about a $40.00 payout).

Mark D +$56.00
Mary ‑$42.00
Paul +$42.00
Phil ‑$44.00
Lyndon ‑$43.00
Mike S +$11.00

Card Night 06-Jul-2010

After canceling Card Night for two weeks due to lack of players, we finally got a game together tonight, albeit with only five participants.

Despite Paul winning jackpot early with four 4s in Texas Hold ’em, jackpot actually grew tonight, thanks to the small turn-out’s rapid play.

Jason was the only winner for the night, the tenth time in recorded Card Night history there was only one winner.

We played a lot of Apollo, a game with a maximum of five players that is usually relegated to early in the evening when we’re waiting for players to arrive.  Jason even called Apollo as the showdown game for the night.  (Lyndon scooped with a 6-high straight.)

Mark D ‑$26.00
Mary ‑$5.00
Paul ‑$18.00
Lyndon ‑$17.00
Jason +$60.00
