Card Night 31-Aug-2010

Phil brought his son Joey to Card Night because they were both going to pick up Phil’s wife Judy at the airport around 9:00 p.m.  Joey joined in for one round of Texas Hold ’em, then sat and watched the antics of the evening unfold.

On a round of 7½-21½, Paul stopped taking cards when he had 9-6-A.  He thought that the game was 7-27 and that he had just made a 26 for high!  Luckily for Paul, the maximum-one-dollar-total-per-betting-round rule was in effect, otherwise he would have been contributing quite a bit more to the pot (and maybe even raising himself).

Paul lost to Mike’s 22.

Three jackpots were paid out tonight:

  • Happy Pineapple: $11.25 to Lyndon with four queens
  • Four-Three: $7.25 to Lyndon with four jacks
  • Omaha Hi-Lo: $7.25 to Mary with a 6-high straight flush (which for some reason is by far the most common straight flush at Card Night)

That makes seven jackpots paid out in the last two Card Nights.

The record for most jackpots paid out over two consecutive Card Nights is nine, set back on 20-Dec-2004 (five) and 27-Dec-2004 (four).

With all these payouts, jackpot now stands at a measly $2.00.

Mark D ‑$4.00
Mary ‑$26.00
Paul $0.00
Phil* ‑$42.00
Bill ‑$16.00
Jeff ‑$36.00
Lyndon +$61.00
Mike S +$71.00

* – Includes Joey’s ~$20.00 loss in Texas Hold ’em.

Card Night 24-Aug-2010

Nine players graced the Card Night table tonight, the first time we’ve had that many players in over a year.

Paul was uncharacteristically late, showing up shortly after 7:30.

On a hand of Razz, it was down to just Phil and Mary on the river.  Phil bet, and Mary looked at her hand and said, “I can’t call.”

Mike Stefanidis looked at Mary’s cards over her shoulder and said, “Mary, look at what you’ve got.”

Mary had missed the fact that she had a 7-high, so she called Phil’s bet and ended up winning the hand.

Apparently Mike’s not familiar with the “one player per hand” rule.

Mary has won $100 or more three out of the last four Card Nights she has attended.  She has also won $100 or more four out of the last eight Card Nights she has attended.  No has ever done either one of those things before.

Tonight marked the first time jackpot was won in Four-Three (Jason with four 6s) and the first time jackpot was won in Razz (Paul with four 5s).

Also, Jason won jackpot when his four jacks beat Mary’s full house in Buck ’em.

Tonight also marked the second time in recorded Card Night history that at least some player won or lost $100 or more on five consecutive Card Nights.

Mark D +$24.00
Mary +$102.00
Paul +$75.00
Phil +$8.00
Bill ‑$115.00
Jeff ‑$55.00
Lyndon +$3.00
Jason +$2.00
Mike S ‑$22.00

Card Night 17-Aug-2010

With a relatively short-handed table tonight (six players), Bill pushed for higher limits in our games.

He called Screw Your Neighbor (Chase the Ace) with three stacks of three dollars each.  Lyndon won the game without ever losing a stack.

Later when Mark DeVol called Razz, Bill convinced him to increase the limits to $2-$4.  Jeff cleaned up in the game.  Bill got slaughtered.

Mark D +$63.00
Paul ‑$101.00
Phil +$2.00
Bill ‑$23.00
Jeff +$27.00
Lyndon +$13.00

Card Night 10-Aug-2010

Buck ’em led to some fireworks tonight.

Bill went in high with a straight on a five-cards-out-of-seven round, and was called by three people, all of whom beat him!  (Mary had a flush, Paul and Jeff each had full houses.)  Bill had to pay each of them $15.50.

Later, Bill went in high in late position with 10-10 on a two-cards-out-of-three round, and was called by a dogging Mark DeVol who had originally passed with a pair of aces.  Damage: $38.75.

At the end of the game, on the two-cards-out-of-three round, Jeff asked for clarification on how the joker plays.  “Completely wild for low, and just an ace for high.”  Jeff, who had one leg at the time, went in low.  Phil checked him off.  Jeff had Joker-2, Phil had A-2, so they tied.  Two more cards were dealt to each player, and this time Jeff went in high.  The pot was $69.75, and Jeff had already lost quite a bit in the game.  Phil thought for a good long while before deciding not to check Jeff off.  No one else played, and Jeff ended up winning the game and the $69.75.  Both Jeff and Phil revealed what they had had on that last round.  Jeff had Joker-2-2, misreading his hand for trip 2s when in fact he just had a pair of 2s with an ace.  Phil had had a pair of aces, and was afraid Jeff had him beat, even though Jeff had only shown him Joker-2 on the first round.

We played Four-Three again tonight, but it didn’t provide much action.  Six people stayed in for the first round, producing a $30.75 pot for the next round which was quickly split between two winners to end the game.

On a hand of Happy Pineapple (Crazy Pineapple Hi-Lo Declare), the flop was 10-10-Q.  Lyndon’s hole cards were A-A-4, and he was trying to decide which card to get rid of.  Lyndon ended up getting rid of the 4, leaving him with pocket aces.

The turn was a 2, making the board 10-10-Q-2.  Now it was looking like Lyndon had gotten rid of the wrong card, because A-4 would have given him a pretty good low.

Bingo, bango, bongo, the river was an ace!  Lyndon now had aces full of 10s.

At showdown both Lyndon and Bill went high.  Lyndon tabled his full house.  Bill showed quad 10s.

(Despite Bill’s awful Buck ’em round earlier, this jackpot hand helped him to a $60.00 win for the night.)

On another hand of Happy Pineapple, Mary had the nut low on the turn with 2-4 in the hole and A-8-9-3 on the board.  The river was a 5, giving Mary the wheel.  Paul, who had not bet or raised the whole hand, suddenly bet out.  Mary thought Paul had also hit the wheel with 2-4 in the hole, so at showdown, she decided to declare high so that she would not be quartered if Paul went low.  It turned out everyone went high, and Paul scooped the pot with a 9-high straight.

On a hand of Screw Your Neighbor (Chase the Ace), it came down to Mark and Paul, each of whom had two stacks of $2.00 left.  Mark was on the button with a 6.  Paul passed him an ace.  Mark drew a 2 off the deck and lost one stack.

On the next deal, with Paul on the button, Mark looked down at a king and said, “I’m good.”  Paul had a 3 and asked for a card off the deck.  The two players were advancing to a final one-stack-each showdown unless Paul drew a king off the deck.

Paul’s card: A king.

Paul scooped the huge $40.00+ pot, helping him on his way to a huge $196.00 win for the night.

Mark D +$11.00
Mary ‑$20.00
Paul +$196.00
Phil ‑$56.00
Bill +$60.00
Jeff ‑$122.00
Lyndon ‑$58.00
Jason +$7.00

Card Night 03-Aug-2010

Tonight we celebrated Lyndon’s 100th Card Night.  He’s doing pretty well so far, recording a 53‑45‑2 record with $711.00 in winnings.

Mary’s the hot player right now having recorded her second $100+ win in a row.  (That’s only happened three times before, once by Glen and twice by Mike Stefanidis.)  Mary’s total for the last ten Card Nights she’s attended is +$317.50.

Four-Three dominated a lot of the action again tonight.  The most dramatic moment came when Mary beat Jason’s 6-high for low when she drew to the wheel and scooped a $38.00 pot.

Phil dealt Pai-Gow Poker, the first time that former staple has been played in a long, long time.

Mark D ‑$24.00
Mary +$104.00
Paul ‑$31.00
Phil ‑$42.00
Jeff ‑$60.00
Lyndon +$121.00
Jason ‑$20.00
Mike S ‑$44.00
