Card Night 26-Dec-2008

We decided to play on Friday night this week so that the game didn’t interfere with Christmas plans.  Plus it gave us a chance to play past our usual 10:00 p.m. stop time.

Mark DeVol sat like a dog in the bushes on a hand of Buck ’em when Mike went in high with a straight and Mark called him off with a flush for $17.25.

It looked like Mike was going to be the big loser for the night, but a couple of big hands brought him back to be the biggest winner for the night (+$99.00).

One of his big hands was when he called No-Limit Texas Hold ’em, the first time we’ve ever played no-limit at Card Night.  Mike and Paul got all their money into the pot (about $40.00 each) when Paul made a flush and Mike ended up with a full house.

Mark D +$37.00
Mary ‑$90.00
Paul +$19.00
Bill ‑$55.00
Jason +$12.00
Mike S +$99.00

Card Night 16-Dec-2008

We at Card Night love to revel in other people’s mistakes.  So here now we present some of the best mistakes of the evening!

On a board of 2-7-8-10-K in Omaha Hi-Lo, with no flush possible, Warren pondered his hand for some time before folding his J-9-x-x.  A jack-high straight.  The absolute nuts for high.

On a hand of Construction, Jason declared both ways, to which Mark DeVol immediately snapped, “That’s a mistake.”  Not only was it not a mistake, but Jason clearly won both ways with a full house for high and a 7-high for low.  Mark needs to do a little less talking and a little more thinking.  (Side note: John called Construction on the very next deal, and Jason scooped again when everyone declared high.)

On a hand of Omaha Hi-Lo, the flop came 9-8-6 all diamonds.  The turn was the queen of diamonds.  The river was another 6.  So, the board ended up being 9-8-6-Q-6 with four diamonds.  During the betting on the river, John folded, and said to Mark, “Boy, that was a whole lot of nothing.  Take a look at my hand.”  Mark picked up John’s folded hand only to see two queens staring back at him.  “John, you had the nut full house!”  John had been so fixated on the possible straight flush on the flop that he failed to see the hand he eventually made.

Mark D ‑$24.00
Mary +$26.00
Paul +$41.00
Warren ‑$32.00
John ‑$39.00
Jason +$123.00
Mike S ‑$70.00
Glen ‑$6.00

Card Night 09-Dec-2008

Love it or hate it, Buck ’em consistently provides interesting blog material.

Tonight, with the pot at $13.50, Mike was dealt an ace and the joker on the first round of the deal.  He declared low.  Bill then declared high.  Before action could get around to Mike again, Jason checked Mike off for low.  Mike beat Jason.  Then, when action did get around to Mike again, he checked Bill off for high.  Mike beat Bill.  On the next round, Mike declared low and got a leg.

Later in the same game, Bill went in high playing two cards out of three, and Mike apologized as he checked him off with a pair of aces.  Bill lost and had to pay Mike over forty dollars.

(Even though Mike made a killing on that game, it was Jason who won the final pot several hands later.)

Despite Bill’s hammering in Buck ’em, he was actually able to post a win for the night by hitting a four-aces jackpot in Omaha Hi-Lo later in the night: $49.75.

Lyndon’s winning ways continue as he posted a personal-best sixth straight win in a row.

Mark DeVol’s December game tonight was Ultimate Bloody 7s.

Don’t forget to watch A Huyser Brothers’ Christmas this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. on ABC Family!

Mark D $0.00
Mary ‑$105.00
Paul ‑$17.00
Bill +$27.00
Lyndon +$24.00
Jason +$15.00
Mike S +$88.00

Card Night 02-Dec-2008

Good grief, Lyndon!  He got off to a huge start and never stopped.  A whopping $169.00 win.  If Glen hadn’t taken down some big pots in 2-11 Poker at the end of the night, Lyndon would have been the only winner… on a table with eight players!

Speaking of 2-11, it turned out to be the last game we played for the night.  Jason called it when the deal got around to him, and everyone let out a collective groan when Glen called it immediately after.

The gang was treated to two games of Buck ’em tonight, thanks to Mary and Bill.  On one round, playing five out of seven cards, Mary went in high, and Paul called her off.  They flipped over their cards: Paul had a flush, Mary had a full house.

On another round, again playing five out of seven cards, Lyndon thought long and hard before finally declaring high.  Bill then called low, and Lyndon again thought long and hard before finally checking Bill off.  Lyndon had gone in high with a flush, but his 7-high was not low enough to beat Bill’s 6-high.  Lyndon had to pay Bill over forty dollars for that hand, but he ended up getting all his money back and a little more when he won the game on the next deal.

Mark DeVol always mixes things up in December by calling games that we don’t typically play.  This week the game was Deuces Wild Guts, a game we used to play constantly, but that has fallen out of the rotation in recent years.  The game only lasted three or four hands before Lyndon (of course) won the final pot.

Mark D ‑$25.00
Mary ‑$8.00
Paul ‑$43.00
Bill ‑$5.00
Lyndon +$169.00
Jason ‑$66.00
Mike S ‑$52.00
Glen +$13.00
