Card Night 26-Feb-2008

Tonight was a sharp contrast to last week.  There were no fireworks, despite the long-awaited return of Ike.

Mike “Strudelhead” Stefanidis was playing scared all night.  He admitted that ten years ago, he’d have been calling and raising like a maniac, but now that he has children, he’s just scared to take any risk.

Mary and Paul called a couple variations of Texas Hold ’em Hi-Lo Declare:

In Mary’s version, a completely wild joker was introduced to the deck.  On her very first deal, the joker showed up in the flop, to everyone’s delight.  Over the course of the next seven hands, Ike was the only player dealt the joker outright.

In Paul’s version, the turn consisted of two cards instead of one, resulting in a board of six cards after the river was dealt.  We noticed that a lot of boards ended up with four cards to a straight.

Shakespeare took center stage throughout the night after Mark Huyser quoted Hamlet: “…there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so…”  However, there was some debate about which of his plays featured the quote, “Shut up and deal the cards.”

Card Night 19-Feb-2008

Well, the horseshoe managed to find its way back up Paul’s ass.  Big time.

This was a wild one, folks.

21st-Century records were being shattered left and right as Paul went on to a huge $256.00 win, eclipsing Mike Coyne’s long-standing single-night record of $240.00 set back on February 11, 2002.

Paul could seemingly do no wrong.

On an Omaha Hi-Lo flop of 5-7-5, Bill had a full house with his 7-5, unaware that Paul had hit a bigger one with 7-7.  They both aggressively bet into the pot all the way to the river.

Later, during a round of Buck ’em, Paul declared high in early position, playing two cards out of three.  When it got around to Mary in late position, she declared low.  Paul apologized to her as he checked her off and beat her low for a large pot.  He had been dealt A-A-2.

Paul ended up winning that Buck ’em game when he declared high playing three cards out of five.  Bill almost called him, but thought better of it.  Good thing for Bill, because Paul turned over trip 7s.

Paul won around $100.00 on that round of Buck ’em alone, which shows you how volatile that game is.  A good or bad round can make the difference in your entire night, regardless of how good or bad your “real” poker play has been.

Bill’s luck in 2008 continues to run sour.  He’s still looking for his first win, and he’s currently on a personal-worst six-session losing streak.

Mark Huyser started his night off well by winning the biggest jackpot payoff in over three years: $56.00 for his four 9s in Omaha Hi-Lo.  He had the second-best win for the night behind Paul, taking home $92.00.

Mike Stefanidis also won jackpot with four 9s in Omaha Hi-Lo.  However, his $30.75 payoff wasn’t enough to offset his losses.  He went home down $48.00.

Mary’s woes started early when she accidentally declared high in Texas Hold ’em Hi-Lo Declare.  She had a near-nut low, but inadvertently put two chips in her fist at showdown.  She got “lucky” in that she was the only one to go high, so she took down half the pot.  However, had she gone low as she’d planned, she would have scooped.

Unlucky situations like running into Paul’s aforementioned A-A-2 in Buck ’em only helped solidify Mary’s $185.00 loss for the night.  It comes in as the second-worst night on record, behind Paul’s $215.00 thrashing back on January 28, 2002.  (Yes, Paul now holds the records for both best night and worst night.)

During Mary’s descent, she started singing Bruce Springsteen’s I’m Goin’ Down.  “I’m goin’ down, down, down, down.  I’m goin’ down, down, down, down.”  Mike then suggested that, as the only woman at the table, she probably shouldn’t be singing that.  There was no double entendre until Mike brought it up.

In addition to being the big winner for the night, Paul is currently on a personal-best streak of consecutive Card Night’s attended: 93 and counting.

We also set the record for the most money exchanged in a single night: $394.00.  There was so much money on the table that we ran out of chips!  (Even so, Phil managed to break even for the night.)

Hey, next week could turn out to be even wilder.  Warren is coming back.

Mark D +$46.00
Mary ‑$185.00
Mark H +$92.00
Paul +$256.00
Phil $0.00
Bill ‑$38.00
Lyndon ‑$53.00
Mike S ‑$48.00

Lyndon must have been glad we took a week off from playing cards, because it gave the horseshoe up Paul’s ass time to find its way into Lyndon’s.

The deck continually pounded Lyndon on the head as he won pot after pot.  If not for Mark DeVol scooping a lucky full-kill Omaha Hi-Lo pot on the last hand of the night, Lyndon would have been the only winner.  His $125.00 win is far and away the biggest night for any player this year, and it catapults him into first place for 2008.

Meanwhile, jackpot has skyrocketed to $107.00.  During an Omaha Hi-Lo hand tonight, Paul needed the jack of hearts to complete a straight flush, but opted to fold to one bet on the turn.  The river: The jack of hearts.  His jackpot win would have been around $75.00.

Mark D +$37.00
Mary ‑$27.00
Paul ‑$70.00
Bill ‑$54.00
Lyndon +$125.00
Mike S ‑$31.00
