Card Night 23-Nov-2010

Four of our regulars couldn’t make it tonight, so we were lucky that Miguel and Ty were free to fill the available seats.  We ended up with seven players.

Ty called Stud 8, and the way people reacted, you’d have thought he had called some new and mysterious card game that would flummox even the most seasoned poker player.  Despite the fact that we’ve played the game many times in the past, the questions flew through the air like winged monkeys in Oz.

“How many cards do we get?”

“How many cards are dealt up and how many are dealt down?”

“Is it high-low?”

“Do we declare?”

“Is there a qualifying low hand?”

“Who brings it in?”

“How much is the bet?”

“Why can’t I raise a dollar here?”

“Can you raise after it’s completed?”

It’s Stud 8!  They play it at the World Series of Poker!  It’s the ‘E’ in HORSE!  WE’VE PLAYED IT BEFORE!

Have a nice Thanksgiving everyone.

Mark D +$16.00
Paul +$59.00

Card Night 16-Nov-2010

Mark DeVol won jackpot on a questionable hand.  He was the dealer and the game was Razz.  On one of the streets, Mark inadvertently started with the wrong player when he dealt the cards.  Despite the mistake, the game continued, and Mark made quad 3s on the river.  (As it turned out, Mark still would have ended up with his jackpot hand even if he hadn’t made the mistake.  But still.)

Lyndon said he will not be at Card Night next week, so his streak of attending 22 Card Nights in a row (his personal best) ended tonight.

Four-Three was a friend to Mary and an enemy to Paul.  Mary scooped several pots.  Paul, not so much.

Mark D ‑$31.00
Mary +$69.00
Paul ‑$71.00
Warren ‑$33.00
Phil +$55.00

The Card Night podcast comes to an end

The site that hosts the Card Night podcast is closing down, and since I couldn’t find a suitable replacement site (and since I don’t think anybody really listens to the podcast anyway), I have decided to discontinue it.

The final episode has been posted.  You can listen to it (and previous episodes) up until the site closes on December 31, 2010.

Card Night 09-Nov-2010

Big pots seemed to be the theme tonight, but not because we played Buck ’em and Four-Three.  (Those two games turned out to be relatively tame.)  Most of the money was won and lost in $2-$4 Omaha Hi-Lo and in Razz.

Bill just can’t catch a break this year.  Tonight he lost two big Razz pots with fantastic hands.  Both times someone else made a wheel.

Last week someone asked what the age limits are for the various San Diego County casinos.  Here’s a rundown:

Barona 18
Golden Acorn 18
Harrah’s Rincon  21
Pala 21
Pauma 18
Santa Ysabel 21
Sycuan 18
Valley View 21
Viejas 18

Mark D +$85.00
Mary ‑$3.00
Paul +$100.00
Phil ‑$20.00
Bill ‑$61.00
Jeff ‑$99.00
Lyndon ‑$50.00
Mike S +$32.00

What happened to the Web site?

Monday morning, I opened up the Football Pool results and was horrified to find that the page was completely empty!  All the data had disappeared.  Luckily I remembered that there were only two people still alive in the pool (both with the same number of wins), and each of them had picked a different team for the Monday night game, so at least I was able to determine who would win.

Today, while looking over the Web site, I realized that it wasn’t just the Football Pool data that were lost.  The entire contents of the Card Night Web site had reverted back to the state they were at a week ago!  All the Card Night results, all the players’ pages, everything that had been updated or added during the past week had disappeared.  This is very, very odd.

Luckily, I have all the Card Night results on my PC.  So really the only thing that was completely lost (as far as I can tell) was everyone’s Football Pool entries from Week 8.

Hopefully our Web host Tripod will be able to restore them.  But I’m not holding my breath.

Card Night 02-Nov-2010

Jackpot has finally been won!

With jackpot at its highest value ever ($154.75), Mike Stefanidis flopped four 9s in Omaha Hi-Lo to take down $77.50, the second biggest jackpot payout ever.  (Paul won $85.55 with a straight flush back in 2004.)  It was Mike’s 69th jackpot win (a Card Night record) and brings his total jackpot winnings to $1,306.25 (also a Card Night record).

On the very same round of Omaha Hi-Lo, Phil won jackpot with four queens ($39.00).  Then later in the night, Phil won jackpot again with four 5s ($24.25).

Jackpot now stands at $27.00.  Not bad after a three-jackpot-win night.

Even without winning jackpot, Paul got off to a huge early lead and continued to build his stack throughout the night.  Then Bill called Chase the Ace as the penultimate game of night, and Paul won that as well (a net win of $47.00).  Paul finished the night with his second biggest win ever: $245.00.  (Paul won $256.00 back on 19-Feb-2008.)  He now joins Mike as the only players with two $200+ wins.

Meanwhile, Mary suffered her worst Card Night ever, dropping $197.00.  Most of that came on Four-Three.  The pot never got higher than $40.00, but Mary lost quite a few hands.

With all the money flying across the felt, we set a new Card Night record for most money exchanged between winners and losers: $453.00.  (Jackpot was one of the big “losers” as we drained it of $124.00 (also a Card Night record)).

Mark D ‑$58.00
Mary ‑$197.00
Paul +$245.00
Phil +$61.00
Bill ‑$54.00
Jeff +$41.00
Lyndon +$13.00
Mike S +$93.00
Glen ‑$20.00
