Card Night 27-Jan-2009

Holy cow, Lyndon!  His hot streak continues!  He was the big winner tonight, taking home $144.

Lyndon has only lost at Card Night four times going back to July of last year.  During that period he’s won $625.

When playing a low hand, everyone knows that an ace is the lowest card.  However, what people may not realize is that when playing a low hand, a pair of aces is the lowest pair.  It makes sense, when you stop to think about it.  But situations where it would even matter come up so rarely that people don’t really get the chance to stop and think about it.

Tonight, John was on the short end of this rare occurrence.  In a five-card stud hi-lo declare game (with down-cards wild), the four remaining players at the end of the hand all had natural pairs showing.  John’s pair was aces.  When it came time to declare, John went high and lost to a four-of-a-kind.  He didn’t realize that with his pair of aces, not only did he have the highest hand showing for high, he also had the lowest hand showing for low.  Had he declared low, he would have won half the pot.

Card Night 20-Jan-2009

With only five of us in attendance tonight, the hands came fast and furiously.

Lyndon changed things up a bit by calling casino-style Razz and Seven-Card Stud when the deal came around to him.  But the game of choice for the evening seemed to be $2-$4 Limit Texas Hold ’em.

Countless pots came down to just Paul and Mike, and it seemed that each of them was trying to see who could win the most pots with the stupidest hands.  Apparently Paul won that battle, taking home $108.00.

Mark D +$34.00
Paul +$108.00
Phil ‑$93.00
Lyndon ‑$39.00
Mike S +$4.00

Card Night 13-Jan-2009

There wasn’t much in Mary’s rack as she started the evening, but as time passed, it filled up nicely.  She posted her first win of the year, taking home $26.00.

Bill had to work late and wasn’t planning on attending, but a seat opened up, so he hightailed it to the table, showing up about an hour into our session.  The time missed didn’t hurt him a bit, as he ended the night as the big winner: $102.00.

Paul +$17.00
Warren ‑$20.00
Bill +$102.00

Card Night 06-Jan-2009

Compared to our two previous Friday sessions, tonight’s Tuesday game was rather tame.

The usual abuse and inane conversation was tossed around, often dealing with saying (or not saying) things precisely:

  • What does it mean when you just say, “With a kill”?  Is that a half kill or a full kill?
  • A re-raise is not the same thing as a raise.
  • When something’s being “recorded” on a DVR, that doesn’t mean it’s being “taped.”
  • I live for the GMAC Bowl.
  • Money can’t buy you happiness, although you can buy hookers with it.

The usual.

Mark D ‑$45.00
Mary ‑$60.00
Paul ‑$6.00
Bill +$80.00
John +$48.00
Jason ‑$44.00

Card Night 02-Jan-2009

Tonight was another Friday session, allowing us to play past midnight.  There was a lot of talk towards the beginning of the night about how people’s styles had changed along with the new year.  But as the night wore down, it was clear that things were “business as usual.”

Mark DeVol had his biggest single Card Night win ever: $140.00.  And yet, he wasn’t even the biggest winner of the night!  That honor went to Paul: $142.00.

Mark won jackpot on a very questionable hand.  Paul was dealing Texas Hold ’em, and Mark had 9-5 offsuit in the big blind.  The flop was 10-5-5.  Mark bet, and only Bill called.  When the turn brought another 5, everyone noticed that the next card on top of the deck (the one that would be burned before the river) was blue, but the rest of the deck was red!  A quick analysis revealed that only two blue cards were mixed in with the red deck, and none of them had been played in the hand yet.  So the hand continued.  Mark checked and Bill checked.  The river was a queen.  Mark bet and Bill folded.  Mark won the pot and collected a $14.75 jackpot with four 5s.

Old 2-11 Poker came back to bite Bill again.  On the river, it came down to just Mark and Bill.  Mark bet and Bill raised.  Mark thought for a second, and said, “I don’t think you hit a full house.  I re-raise.”  Bill just called, and announced, “I have 3-4 for low.”  Unfortunately, Bill had forgotten the 7-high low rule in 2-11, and thought he was playing an 8-high for low.  Mark scooped the pot with the nut flush.

Mark D +$140.00
Mary ‑$150.00
Paul +$142.00
Bill +$24.00
Jason ‑$173.00
Mike S ‑$60.00
Glen +$59.00
