Card Night 30-May-2013

Jason dealt a round of Stud 8.  On one hand, after the initial betting round, only Jeff and Jason were still in.  Jason dealt a card to Jeff, and then he dealt a card to Glen, who had already folded.  The card was a 5, and Jason was upset because his door card was also a 5.

“There’s my 5!” Jason complained.

“Jason, that is your 5!  Glen folded.”

“Oh!”

So Jason now had a pair of 5s showing.  He bet, and Jeff called.

He dealt another card to Jeff and himself.  He got another 5.

Jason bet his three 5s, and Jeff called.

Another card.  Another 5.  Jason had quad 5s showing.

Jeff folded before Jason could bet, and Jason collected the pot, along with a $22.00 jackpot.

In a funny coincidence, Jeff won $134.00 tonight, the same amount he won last week.

Jeff is now ahead $23.00 overall for Card Night.

Mark D ‑$54.00
Bill ‑$113.00
Jeff +$134.00
Jason +$78.00
Glen ‑$45.00

Jackpot is now $41.00.

Miguel dealt Pai-Gow Poker, a game we used to play constantly at Card Night, but now a game we rarely play.

On one hand, Mary was dealt four 7s.  She almost split the 7s between her two hands (a pair of 7s up top, a pair of 7s behind), but eventually played all four 7s in her five-card hand.  Good thing she did, because otherwise she wouldn’t have won jackpot.  From our house rules:

In the case of Pai-Gow Poker, a player does NOT win jackpot if he splits the otherwise jackpot-winning hand between his five-card and two-card hands. In other words, in order to win jackpot, all the cards of the jackpot-winning hand must be completely within the five-card hand.

Mark D +$18.00
Mary ‑$44.00
Jeff +$134.00
Jason ‑$188.00
Miguel +$13.00
Glen +$82.00

Jackpot is now $41.00.

Card Night 15-May-2013

On a hand of Texas Hold ’em, Mark DeVol raised preflop.  The only callers were Dave Hansen in the small blind, and Bill in the big blind.

The flop came J-3-3.  Dave and Bill checked.  Mark bet, and Bill and Dave called.

The turn was a 9.  Dave checked.  Bill bet.  Mark raised (he had A-J).  Dave folded.  Bill reraised (he had 9-3).  Mark thought for a moment and folded.  Hand over; Bill won.

Then Jeff (who was dealing) went rabbit hunting and dealt a river card.  It was the case 3.

If Bill hadn’t reraised, he would have made quad 3s and won jackpot.

Mark D ‑$11.00
Mary ‑$190.00
Dave H +$173.00
Bill ‑$19.00
Jeff ‑$99.00
Lyndon ‑$16.00
Jason +$21.00
Glen +$126.00

Jackpot is now $56.00.

Card Night 09-May-2013

Tonight was The Night of the Phantom Straight Flushes.

On two occasions, a player declared that he had a straight flush when in fact he did not.

First it was Jeff who claimed a king-high club straight flush in Omaha Hi-Lo.  He turned over Q♣9♣-x-x, but the board only had A♣K♣10♣-x-x (no J♣).  Still, he had the nut flush and won the hand.

Next it was Mike Stefanidis who claimed to have a jack-high heart straight flush, also in Omaha Hi-Lo.  However, Mike forgot the Omaha rule that a player must use two of his hole cards and three of the community cards to make his hand.  On a board of J♥10♥9♥8♥-x, Mike turned over 7♥-x-x-x.  He lost the hand to Jeff, who had a straight.

Mark D +$15.00
Mary ‑$15.00
Bill ‑$8.00
Jeff +$142.00
Jason ‑$54.00
Mike S ‑$96.00
Glen $0.00

Jackpot is now $41.00.
