Card Night 29-Dec-2015

We played four December games tonight, thanks to the low turnout:

On a hand of Bingo, there were four cards left to be revealed on the board.  Chris basically had the high wrapped up with all five of his original cards: A-8-8-5-5.

Unfortunately for him, a 5 came up on the next two cards.  Now he was in bad shape.  Mary and Jerry were still in the hand (with two and three cards left), and could easily beat his high (27) and his low (17).

Amazingly, the last two cards revealed were an ace and an 8, and Chris scooped the pot.

Once again Glen was the big winner for the calendar year, taking home $1,109.00 for 2015.  It’s his fifth time with this honor.

Jerry +$124.00
Mark D ‑$28.00
Mary ‑$127.00
Chris ‑$27.00
Glen +$40.00

Jackpot is now $67.00.

Card Night 22-Dec-2015

The December game tonight was Stud ’em, a game with elements from Texas Hold ’em and Stud.  It turned out to be quite different from any game we’ve played before.

The betting is the same as Hold ’em.  Blinds are posted, and each player receives two hole cards.  Following a betting round, each player receives one up card.  There is another betting round.  Then a flop of three cards is dealt followed by a betting round.  Finally, each player receives one final down card.  There is a final betting round.

So at the end of the game, each player has four cards (three down and one up).  He makes his best poker hand using any combination of his four cards and the three community cards.

Jerry +$61.00
Ty ‑$4.00
Mark D ‑$61.00
Mary ‑$87.00
Chris ‑$47.00
Jeff +$63.00
Miguel +$48.00
Glen +$13.00

Jackpot is now $49.00.

Card Night 15-Dec-2015

Three new December games tonight.

First was Two or Five Omaha Hi-Lo.  It played like Omaha, except that each player got five hole cards, and at showdown a player could use two hole cards and three cards from the board to make his hand, or he could just use all of his five hole cards to make his hand.  As it turned out, we never had a case where a player used his five hole cards to make his hand, so the game pretty much played like Big O.

Next was Kimo Hi-Lo.  Each player received six hole cards and immediately discarded two of them.  Then the game just played like Omaha Hi-Lo.  We expected to see bigger hands than regular Omaha Hi-Lo, but for some reason that wasn’t the case.

Finally, there was Seven-Card Stud, Roll Your Own, Lowest Hole-Card Is Wild.  Just like it sounds, it was Seven-Card stud, and on each of the up-card streets, players would be dealt a card down and decide which one they would flip up.  At showdown, each player’s lowest hole card was wild.

Mark D ‑$28.00
Mary +$71.00
Chris ‑$25.00
Jeff +$132.00
Jason ‑$58.00
Glen ‑$78.00

Jackpot is now $35.00.

Card Night 08-Dec-2015

Bill won at least part of each of the first eleven pots of the night.  That’s probably a record, although we don’t keep track of that type of thing.  It wasn’t enough to secure him a winning night though, as he lost $14.00.

Mark DeVol called two “goofy” December games tonight.

First was Courchevel, a game we first played about six years ago.  It plays like Omaha with the following differences:

  • Everyone gets five hole cards
  • The first card of the flop is dealt up before the first betting round.

The second game was Badacey.  It’s a five-card triple-draw game where the best low poker hand splits the pot with the best Badugi hand.  It generated some huge pots and some big wins and losses.

Jerry +$15.00
Mark D +$111.00
Mary ‑$165.00
Bill ‑$14.00
Chris +$41.00
Jeff +$62.00
Jason ‑$101.00
Glen +$35.00

Jackpot is now $49.00.

Card Night 01-Dec-2015

Ooo, Jerry had a rough night.  A good chunk of his losses came from the round of Bingo he called, but the other games didn’t do him any favors either.  He ended up losing $333.00, setting a new Card Night record.  (The previous record was a $315.00 loss by Jason on 01-Apr-2014.)  Not surprisingly, Jerry said it was probably the worst night of poker in his entire life.

It’s December, so Mark DeVol called one of his “goofy” games.  Tonight it was 2-11 Poker, a game we used to play with some regularity.  It was well-received.

Jerry ‑$333.00
Mark D ‑$11.00
Bill +$91.00
Chris +$109.00
Jeff +$152.00
John ‑$35.00
Glen +$10.00

Jackpot is now $33.00.
