Card Night 30-Oct-2012

Mary called Four-Three tonight with a joker in the deck that was completely wild.  If it was dealt to you, you were pretty much forced to stay in; it was just too powerful.

Even with the joker out there, the pot got big fast.

On the first round, five players stayed in.  Two players won, so the pot grew to $30.50.

On the second round, three players stayed in.  One player won, so the pot grew to $60.75.

On the third round, Glen and Mary stayed in, and ended up splitting the pot.

Jason has been a winner for the last six Card Nights he has attended (a personal best).

Mark D +$7.00
Mary ‑$59.00
Paul ‑$149.00
Bill +$13.00
Lyndon ‑$10.00
Jason +$67.00
Glen +$112.00

Jackpot is now $40.00.

Card Night 23-Oct-2012

Stud 8 is quite a game, as Lyndon can tell you.

On one hand, he ended up winning the high half of the pot with just ace-high.

On another hand, he lost with a full house.

As part of our statistics, we keep track of everyone’s records for the last 10 Card Nights he or she has attended.  We keep track of losing and winning nights, as well as the total amount of money won or lost.

After tonight, Bill has a perfectly average record.  That is, his win-loss record is 5-5, and during that period, he’s dead even.  That hasn’t happened to any player in over three years.

Oh, except for when the same thing happened to Lyndon tonight.  He’s 5-5, and dead even.

Mark D ‑$7.00
Mary ‑$119.00
Paul ‑$76.00
Bill +$158.00
Jeff ‑$66.00
Lyndon +$82.00
Jason +$123.00
Glen ‑$69.00

Jackpot is now $21.00.

Card Night 09-Oct-2012

Tonight Paul attended his 181st consecutive Card Night, breaking Mark DeVol’s record of 180.  “How is that even possible,” you might ask, “since Mark is the host of Card Night?”  Well, it was all thanks to a night back in October 2009 when Mike Stefanidis hosted Card Night while Mark was out of town.

So congratulations to Paul for not missing a Card Night in over three years.

When the deal got around to Jason tonight, he called “Jason 8” (his modest name for “Stud 8”).  And indeed it was “Jason 8” as he scooped some huge pots on his way to a +$237.00 night.

A win that big means one or more big losses.  And, in fact, tonight marked the first time in Card Night history that three players each lost more than $100.00.

For the first time we can remember, the betting was capped on a round of an Omaha Hi-Lo kill hand ($4-$8 limits).  The board was A-7-8-9 rainbow on the turn, and with five players still in the hand, the betting was capped at $32.00.

The river was an 8, pairing the board, and that put a halt to the aggression as players were obviously worried about a full house.  The bet was only $8.00 on the final betting round.

At showdown, there was no full house.  Paul and Jeff both showed J-10-x-x for the nut straight, and they split the high pot.  Bill and Lyndon both showed 3-2-x-x for the nut low, and they split the low pot.  (Mary was the fifth player in; she had stayed hoping to win low with 4-2-x-x.)

So, even though the overall pot was large (well over $200.00), not that much money was won by each of the four players.  They basically just split Mary’s money.

Mark D +$76.00
Mary ‑$104.00
Paul ‑$131.00
Bill ‑$151.00
Jeff +$87.00
Lyndon ‑$31.00
Jason +$237.00
Miguel +$2.00

Jackpot is now $47.00.

Card Night 02-Oct-2012

Over the past weekend, several Card Night players attended a poker tournament at a friend’s house.  On one of the flops, a pair of 8s showed up.  One of the players said, “Bill Lindsay calls those dog balls.”  (Bill was not at the tournament.)

“He does?” Mark DeVol asked.  “I’ve never heard him say that before, and I play poker with him every week!”

So tonight, during a hand of Omaha Hi-Lo, a pair of 8s showed up on the flop.

Mark asked, “Bill, what do you call those?”

“Dog balls,” responded Bill.

“We’ve never heard you call them that before!”

The hand played out, with some pretty aggressive back-and-forth betting between Bill and Lyndon.  At showdown, Lyndon showed a full house.  Bill showed pocket dog balls for four-of-a-kind.

Mark D ‑$65.00
Mary +$68.00
Paul +$97.00
Bill +$33.00
Jeff ‑$122.00
Lyndon +$7.00
Jason +$25.00
Glen ‑$36.00

Jackpot is now $32.00.
