Card Night 03-Dec-2013

Every December, Mark DeVol calls games we don’t normally play.

First up tonight was a version of Stud 8 where a qualifying high hand had to be two pairs or better, and a qualifying low hand had to be 8-high or lower.  If there was no qualifying low hand, the pot would go to a qualifying high hand.  If there was no qualifying high hand, the pot would go to a qualifying low hand.  If there was neither a qualifying high hand nor a qualifying low hand, the pot would be evenly distributed to all players still in the hand.

The game pretty much played like normal Stud 8, except that players with only one pair tended to be less aggressive.

Next was Wild Cards Going Both Ways, a Seven-Card Stud game where a player’s lowest down-card is wild for high, and his highest down-card is wild for low.

On one hand, Chris was dealt two kings down, and another king for his first up-card!  He was guaranteed to have at least four kings by the end of the hand, and he already had three wild cards for a low (wild cards that would remain wild no matter what his last down-card was).

Just before the river, Chris had made a 6-high for low.  However, when he looked over at Mary’s hand, she had already made the wheel with 2-3-4-5 showing.  Meanwhile, Glen was showing two aces and was betting aggressively.  Could he have four aces?

Chris’s final card did not improve his hand.  He grudgingly called a bet and a raise, and declared high.  Sure enough, Glen had four aces, and of course Mary had the wheel.

Chris had what would normally be a monster hand in this game (four kings for high, 6-high for low), but couldn’t win either way.

Finally, we played Six-Card Texas Hold ’em.  Everyone is dealt six cards to start.  After the initial betting round, every player divides his six cards into three two-card hands.  After the betting round on the flop, all players must discard one of their two-card hands.  After the betting round on the turn, all players must discard another one of their two-card hands.  Now all players just have two cards, and the game continues just like regular Texas Hold ’em.

This proved to be the most popular December game of the night.
