Although his overall win was only $11.00, Warren had a very good night, scooping some big pots and winning jackpot with four 10s in Omaha Hi-Lo.
Mark Huyser told an interesting story he had heard about how in the olden days, manure had to be safely stored when being transported on trains and ships so that it didn’t generate highly flammable methane gas. The manure was labeled “Ship High in Transit,” and the acronym for that label became the vulgar name for feces that we all know and love. (Unfortunately, as Mark H suspected, it’s just an urban legend.)
During a hand of Five-Card Draw, Deuces Wild, Lyndon bet $1.00 before the draw and got a whopping four callers: Warren, Mark H, Mary, and John. However, the hands couldn’t have been that good, because everyone then drew three cards each (aside from John who only drew one). After the draw, Lyndon again bet $1.00. Warren, and Mark H folded, and Mary raised a dollar. John folded. Lyndon thought for a good while and finally decided to re-raise another dollar. Mary called. Mary turned over a natural two pair; Lyndon turned over a straight with wild cards.
So let’s review: It was a wild-card game, and Mary raised with two pair. Then Lyndon re-raised with a straight, again, in a game with wild cards. Then Mary called. Did I mention the game had wild cards?
Warren’s win was thanks to some good deception on his part. In Hi-Lo games it often looked like he was going one way when in fact he was going the other way.
He also had a lot of luck.
On one of the final Omaha Hi-Lo hands of the night, Paul, Warren, Mark H, and Mary were still in when the turn brought a board of A♥–10♣-2♣-Q♦. Everyone checked. The river brought the jack of clubs. So now the board was A♥–10♣-2♣-Q♦-J♣. Everyone checked around to Paul. Paul had the ace-high straight, and since everyone had checked, he figured no one had the flush. Paul bet. Everyone called, first Warren, then Mark, then Mary. They all had the ace-high straight… except for Warren, who had the nut flush with A♣-8♣.
