Card Night 18-Mar-2008

The sparkling wit and respected intelligence of the Card Night members were highlighted tonight as the conversation ran the gamut of current affairs, from whether or not students should be suspended for bringing cake knives to school, to what the Democrats need to do to win in November.  What a pleasure to sit at a table with such stimulating discussion!

We picked our teams for this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Pool. Entries and results are here.

Bill had played poker with another group of friends the night before until 4:00 a.m.!  But, although he was tired, it didn’t seem to affect his play tonight as he took home $54.00 in winnings.

At the end of the night, Bill called Buck ’em.  He was going to introduce a joker into the deck (which is the way he plays the game with his Wednesday poker group), but after some confusion erupted as to how the joker could be played, he chose to remove it.

The confusion arose when it was stated that the joker could be used only as an ace, or to complete a straight, flush, or straight flush.  Everyone but Bill took that ruling literally, whether a player was going high or low.  However, at Bill’s Wednesday game, they have an additional rule which states that, when going low, the joker is completely wild (or, put another way, the joker acts as the lowest unmatched rank in the player’s hand).  For example, if the player had the following hand for low:

…the joker would act as a 3, so the player would be playing 6-4-3-2-A for low.

This is actually a pretty standard way to play with a joker in a low or high-low game.
