It’s December, and that means Mark DeVol calls “goofy” games.
Tonight’s game was Big Nuts (aka Criss-Cross Omaha Hi-Lo) and was suggested by one of the You Can Bet on That listeners. It plays like Omaha Hi-Lo, except the five cards on the board are arranged to make a cross. Players make their hands by using exactly two of their down cards, and three cards from the horizontal line on the board or three cards from the vertical line on the board.
We realized early on that the winning hands in this game were much lower than the winning hands in Omaha Hi-Lo, due to the restrictions on which cards from the board players could use. (Also, low qualified much less. In eight deals, low only qualified once.)
We never really got a sense of what was a good starting hand. Maybe high cards that were coordinated?
Anyway, the game was moderately well-received.
