Card Night 16-Feb-2010

We had the Winter Olympics on TV in the background, and questions about the origin of the biathlon were raised.  (The biathlon is a competition that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting.)

It turns out that the biathlon’s modern origins can be traced to the Norwegian military in the 1700s.  The terrain and climate in Scandinavia required troops to be trained and equipped for combat in winter conditions.  This of course included skiing and shooting.

The biathlon was featured as a demonstration event at the Winter Olympics in 1924, 1928, 1936, and 1948, but it was not until the 1960 games that it was officially included as an individual event for male athletes.

Mike has hypothesized that players sitting on the western side of the Card Night poker table (closest to the microwave oven) win more than players sitting on the eastern side of the table (closest to the Pooyan video arcade machine).  He says that he will start recording data in an effort to prove this theory.
