Card Night 06-Oct-2009

Buck ’em had a profound impact on people’s results tonight.

On a two-cards-out-of-three round with a $23.25 pot, Phil declared high.  He already had one leg, so if no one checked him off and no one went low, he’d win the game.  Bill thought for a long while about it, and finally decided to check Phil off.  When the hand was over, both Bill and Phil went for their wallets, each thinking he had lost to the other.  It turns out Phil had had Q-Q while Bill had had a king and the joker.  Phil had thought that the joker was wild, giving Bill a pair of kings.  But, when playing two cards out of three for high, the joker is always an ace, so Bill had A-K.  Bill paid Phil the $23.25.  (Yes, Bill checked Phil off with just A-K!  Bill must have REALLY thought Phil was bluffing.)

Later, the following happened on a five-cards-out-of-seven round with a $62.00 pot.  Phil passed.  Glen passed.  Mark DeVol passed.  Mike, who already had one leg, declared high.  It was passed all the way around back to Glen who decided to check Mike off.  Glen had an ace-high flush.  Mike had a full house.  This round solidified Mike’s and Glen’s results for the entire night.  (Glen had been on a tear up to this point, seemingly making the nut low in every Omaha Hi-Lo hand he played.)

Bill ended up winning the game when the pot was $77.50.  Even so, his night had been going so badly that he still ended up down for the night.

Mark D +$12.00
Mary +$13.00
Paul ‑$55.00
Phil ‑$19.00
Bill ‑$13.00
Lyndon +$19.00
Mike S +$58.00
Glen ‑$31.00
