Card Night 19-May-2009

Our good friend Matt returned to Card Night after almost two years.  (There were 89 Card Nights between the last time he played and tonight.  That’s a new record for “Longest streak between attended Card Nights.”  That record will be broken by Frank if and when he attends again.)  The last time Matt attended was three weeks before Lyndon’s first Card Night, so tonight marked the first time they had played together.

Bill got the night off to a raucous start by calling Buck ’em as the very first game.

On a five-out-of-seven-card round for high, Matt’s full house lost to Paul’s higher full house for an $11.50 pot.

On a five-out-of-seven-card round for low, Bill’s 7-high lost to Mark DeVol’s 6-high for a $17.25 pot.

On a five-out-of-seven-card round for high, Mark’s straight lost to Matt’s flush for a $23.00 pot.

Mary was dealt an ace and the joker on a two-out-of-three-card round and declared low.  Bill then declared high, but Mary didn’t realize she could also check him off high with her pair of aces, so no money was exchanged.  After the hand, Mary realized her mistake, and on a subsequent two-out-of-three-card round she was dealt ace-joker again!  She declared low, Matt declared high, and Mary checked him off for a $34.50 pot.

Matt was never able to recover from his bad luck on that initial Buck ’em game and ended up losing $64.00 for the night.

On the other hand, Mary made a killing on the game and never looked back.  Her $82.00 win for the night is her best night since November 2007 and goes a long way to improving on a rocky 2009.

Mark and Mary were the big winners tonight thanks in a large part to one particular hand of Omaha Hi-Lo.

It was a full-kill hand ($2-$4 limits), and Mark raised pre-flop.  Five or six players then saw a flop of A-5-6.

Mark and Mary bet and raised until it was capped.  Paul and Bill came along for the ride.

The turn was a queen.  Again, Mark and Mary capped the betting (making it $16.00 from each player just for this round).  Again, Paul and Bill called.

The river was a 9.  So, the board was A-5-6-Q-9 with no flush possible.  Mark checked.  Mary bet.  Paul finally folded.  Bill called.  Mark check-raised.  Mary re-raised.  Bill and Mark called.  ($12.00 from each player this round.)

Mary won low with 3-2.  Mark won high with trip aces.  They split a pot that was over $150.00.

No one won jackpot, the first time that’s happened since January 13!

Mark served up some beef jerky that one of his mother’s friends had made.  It was a big hit.  The discussion turned to different types of jerky, and someone mentioned that if they were to visit Mike and Lynn, they might be able to try some venison jerky or even some squirrel jerky.  Lyndon said, “Really?” and Mark replied, “Yeah, Mike jerkies a lot of stuff.”

Mark D +$115.00
Mary +$82.00
Paul ‑$73.00
Bill ‑$40.00
Lyndon ‑$49.00
Jason +$13.00
Matt ‑$64.00

How come the night I’m absent, things get wild. You know how I love the large pots. Yes, we have various jerky’s. As of now we have venison, elk, moose and bear jerky. Squirrel does not make good jerky, but stew is great.
